The Process Engineer, reporting to the Process Engineering Supervisor, while supporting Operational Area Superintendent is responsible for evaluating equipment, monitoring processes, and developing improved processes for manufacturing phosphate fertilizers. The position also has responsibilities for identification, implementation, and management of environmental, safety and regulatory issues to ensure world class stewardship of the operation.
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Serves as direct technical support for area operations in a 24/7 manufacturing facility.
- Conducts research to develop and improve chemical manufacturing processes.
- Designs, plans layout, and oversees workers engaged in constructing, controlling and improving equipment to carry out all chemical processes on site.
- Designs/recommends equipment to control movement, storage and loading of products.
- Analyzes operating processes, procedures, and overall reliability to reduce processing time and cost.
- Owns key process parameters and stewards the in-field execution of all process monitoring systems and regulatory compliance programs.
- Designs and plans regulatory and safety control systems for the chemical plant.
- Implementation of business initiatives.
- Acts as a project owner and subject matter expert in support of the facility capital plan.
- Applies principles of chemical engineering to continuously improve personal and process safety, environmental stewardship, and operational efficiency.
- Supports PSM program, regulatory reporting, and compliance.
- Applies principles of chemical engineering to operational risk assessments.
- As an integral member of the operations team, applies chemical engineering principles to all facets of the operation.
- Performs other duties as may be required from time to time.
Qualifications for the position include:
- Possess a B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering with 5 years’ experience, preferred.
- Alternatively, a B.S. Degree in another applicable engineering discipline with a minimum of 5 years’ of experience in a process engineering role
- Possess excellent communication and reporting skills.
- Possess problem solving, trouble-shooting, and diagnostic skills.
- Excellent computer skills with a knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, SAP experience is a plus.
- Knowledge in process safety management practices such as Process Hazard Analysis and Management of Change.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Be a self-starter, able to work with little direct oversight.
- Work well in a fast-paced “team” environment.
The following additional qualifications would be considered a plus:
- Statistical process control and/or six sigma certification.
- Experience with economic analysis and justifications.
- Corrosion and materials selection experience.
- Petro-chem experience preferably fertilizer manufacturing.
- Supervisory skills and experience.
- Experience working in a plant environment.
Work Schedule & Environment:
- 4-day x 10-hour work week, typically Monday through Thursday.
- Requirement to be responsive to plant needs, including production upsets, outages, and turnarounds, during normal and off shift hours.
- Performing work in a combination of office/indoor and manufacturing/outdoor settings.
- Typical manufacturing/processing environment working near moving equipment and mechanical parts, varying levels of noise, and near fumes or airborne particles.
- Performing work outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions including elevated temperatures, cold, rain, snow, etc.
- Performing work from elevated heights, platforms, and/or ladders.
- Performing work using a variety of types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including hard hats, safety glasses/goggles, gloves, hearing protection, respirators, protective suits, fall protection, etc.
- Requires frequent standing, walking, and ascending/descending stairs.
